Poachers caught with leopard hides

In a major breakthrough, the Kangra police arrested two poachers trying to smuggle two leopard hides out of state. The arrested poachers are Sanjay Kumar of Morthu in Bhatiyat and Raj Kumar of Bhatiyat in Chamba district.

SP Kangra, Sanjeev Gandhi said the accused were arrested during a search of their vehicle at a naka near Kotla on the Kangra-Pathankot road. During the search of the vehicle, two leopard hides were seized. The Bolero, in which hides were being carried, had been seized and a case under the wildlife Act had been registered against them.

The SP said wildlife experts had also been asked to help the police in the case. Raids were also being conducted at the residence of the accused in Chamba district.

Sources here said keeping of leopard hides was illegal. There was hardly any market for the hides in India. Hides, claws, bones and other parts of big cats had a big market in China or other South East Asian Countries. The body parts of big cats were used in Chinese medicine. Poachers from the state sold these parts to smugglers.

Due to winter, wild animals were migrating from snowbound areas of the Dhauladhar wildlife sanctuary to lower hills. It increased poaching of wild animals.
