Another tiger run over on tracks near Bhopal

A tiger was run over by aspeeding train in Madhya Pradesh`s Sehore district, bringing the number of deaths in the last one year to 35. The carcass of the semi-adult tiger was found by loco pilot of the goods train driver around 7.40am on Saturday .Another tiger was found dead at the same spot on February 23.

Sources said that a wrong chain fencing around the Midghat railway track near Ratapani forest area was a major reason behind frequent casualties.They said forest minister Gauri Shankar Shejwar has been overlooking recommendations to post wildlife experts to manage core habitats of the big cats.According to forest officials, three villages located in the area have compounded the problems of maintaining the tiger habitat.

Ratapani, spread over 890sqkm, has recorded a population of eight breeding tigers, but has not been notified as a tiger reserve. The area got inprinciple approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in 2008, but state government has delayed declaring it a conservation site to facilitate developmental projects.Recently , the Madhya Pradesh high court admitted a petition over the delay in notifying Ratapani area as a tiger reserve. The petition was moved by RTI activist Ajay Dubey . Notices were served to the department of forest, principal chief conservator of forests, State Wildlife Board and the environment ministry about the delay.

A proposal for the notification of Ratapani as a tiger reserve was moved in the backdrop of rising tiger population in the sanctuary .

Big cats have repeatedly strayed into the Kerwa forests in Bhopal district, resulting in rising man-animal conflict.

7th tiger dies in U`khand in 3 mths

Even as the controversy shrouding the recent death of a tiger in the Bailpadav forest range is yet to settle down, a 10-year-old male tiger was found dead in Corbett Tiger Reserve on Friday. This is the seventh recorded death of a tiger in Uttarakhand this year. Probe is on to ascertain cause of death. CTR deputy director Amit Verma told TOI, “The tiger`s stomach was empty and it had a 3-cm porcupine quill in his front paw, making hunting difficult.“ TNN
