Foresters begin probe into death of tiger cub

A close look and investigation revealed that it was a female tiger cub, aged about one-and-half years.

Ooty: The carcass of a tiger cub with snare wounds in the neck in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) created flutters here, even as the Forest department has launched an investigation into what possibly led to the animal`s death. The foresters attached to the Theppakadu range in MTR during their routine jungle perambulation on Sunday afternoon found a carcass of a tiger inside the woods at Doddahatty section of Imberallah area.

A close look and investigation revealed that it was a female tiger cub, aged about one-and-half years. Forest department sources said there was an old snare wound found around the neck on the carcass. "It is assumed that the cub could have got itself trapped in the metal snare set up elsewhere in the jungle hamlets around the MTR periphery. It would have injured itself when trying to pull itself off the snare wire. While the real cause of death is yet to be determined, the foresters have formed a team to investigate into this to book the culprits who set up a snare in the jungle fringes. An autopsy will be done on the carcass on Monday," a source said.
