UNNATURAL DEATHS/KILLINGS OF WILD ANIMALS

Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FORESTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE be pleased to state:-

(a) whether the Government has maintained any data regarding the number of lions, tigers, elephants and rhinos in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof, State/ UT-wise including Tamil Nadu;
(c) whether the Government maintains any records of unnatural deaths/killings of wild animals in the country; and
(d) if so, the details thereof indicating the number of such wild animals died/killed during the last two years and the current year, State/UT-wise including Tamil Nadu?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a), (b), (c) AND (d) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. *118 REGARDING “UNNATURAL DEATHS/KILLINGS OF WILD ANIMALS” BY SHRI R. P. MARUTHARAJAA DUE FOR REPLY ON 22.12.2017.

(a)&(b) Census of major flagship species is undertaken at the State-level by the respective State/Union Territory Governments periodically. However census of tiger and elephant is undertaken at the national level once in every four and five years respectively. State-wise estimated population of lions, tigers, elephants and rhinos including in Tamil Nadu are given in Annexure-I (a), Annexure-I

(b), Annexure-I (c) and Annexure-I (d).

(c)&(d) Reports of death of wild animals particularly tigers and elephants have been received in the Ministry from the different parts of the country. As per the report of National Tiger Conservation Authority and Project Elephant, state-wise details of, tigers and elephants which have died, including Tamil Nadu during last two years and the current year, are at Annexure-II (a) and Annexure-II (b). However, the death of other animals is not collated in the Ministry.
