PROTECTION OF TIGERS

Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FORESTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE be pleased to state:-

(a) whether the Government is implementing any special scheme for the protection of tigers in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof along with the funds being provided to Madhya Pradesh under the said scheme; and
(c) the efforts being made by the Government to increase the amount of funds for tiger protection scheme as per the requirements of the States for the purpose?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a), (b) & (c) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. *174 ON PROTECTION OF TIGERS DUE FOR REPLY ON 29.12.2017

(a) The Government of India implements the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger which is ongoing in nature through the National Tiger Conservation Authority, in association with tiger range States.

(b) The fund released to tiger range States under the ongoing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger during last five years and current year, State-wise, inter alia including the State of Madhya Pradesh is at Annexure-I.

(c) Besides increase in the allocation under Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger, there are provisions in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 as amended in 2006, which enable States to augment their own resources. As per section 38X of the said Act, Tiger Conservation Foundation(s) are established in individual tiger reserves. One of their objective is to augment and mobilize financial resources including recycling of entry and such other fees received in a tiger reserve, to foster stakeholders development and eco-tourism.
